This dictionary reflects the vitality of the Maori language in its shift towards establishing itself as a modern language of everyday discourse. It supplements "The Oxford Maori Picture Dictionary" with additional modern words and their Maori equivalents. It also offers alternatives that do not invalidate the words of the earlier publication, or those which which Maori people are continually creating for themselves.

"A Modern Maori Picture Dictionary" will continue the revival of the Maori language: in Maori communities, in adult language classes, in primary and secondary schools, and in pre-school institutions.
